Biochar & Pyrolysis Basics
What is Biochar, and how is it made?
Biochar is a highly stable, carbon-rich porous material produced through pyrolysis—the thermal decomposition of biomass in an oxygen-limited environment. Unlike charcoal, it is engineered specifically for soil health, water retention, and microbial habitat creation.
What is the difference between Raw Biochar and “Charged” Biochar?
Raw biochar acts like a dry sponge. If applied directly to soil without nutrients, it can temporarily absorb nearby moisture and nutrients. “Charged” (or activated) biochar is pre-loaded with organic matter, compost, or beneficial microbes so it delivers nutrients to plant roots from day one. (Our Biochar Green comes pre-charged and ready to use).
How long does Biochar last in the soil?
Unlike organic fertilizers that break down within months, biochar’s carbon structure remains stable in the soil for hundreds of years. It serves as a permanent infrastructure upgrade for your soil.
What biomass feedstock is used to manufacture Growme Biochar?
We use sustainably sourced, high-lignin hard wood biomass. Processing this raw feedstock via controlled pyrolysis ensures a high fixed carbon content, low ash residue, and maximum structural durability in the soil.
Can Biochar Green reduce water usage?
Yes. The porous structure of biochar helps retain moisture in the soil, reducing the frequency of irrigation.
Is Biochar suitable for all soil types?
Yes. Biochar works effectively in sandy, clay, loamy, and degraded soils.
What are the advantages of Biochar?
Biochar offers several benefits:
1. Improves soil structure
2. Increases water retention
3. Stores nutrients for longer periods
4. Enhances beneficial soil microorganisms
5. Supports sustainable farming
6. Helps sequester carbon
Which plants can use Biochar Green?
It is suitable for vegetables, fruits, flowering plants, ornamental plants, lawns, trees, shrubs, and agricultural crops.
Vermicompost
What is Vermicompost?
Vermicompost is a nutrient-rich organic fertilizer produced through the natural digestion process of earthworms. It contains essential nutrients and beneficial microbes that improve soil fertility.
What are the benefits of Vermicompost?
Vermicompost:
1. Improves soil texture
2. Encourages root growth
3. Enhances microbial activity
4. Provides slow-release nutrients
5. Supports healthy plant growth
Can Vermicompost be used for indoor plants?
Yes. Vermicompost is safe and effective for indoor plants, balcony gardens, potted plants, and houseplants.
How often should Vermicompost be applied?
For potted plants, apply every 30–45 days. For gardens and farms, application depends on crop requirements and soil condition.
Does Vermicompost have an unpleasant smell?
No. Properly processed vermicompost has a mild earthy smell and is safe to handle.
Fermented Organic Manure (FOM)
What is Fermented Organic Manure (FOM)?
FOM is an organic fertilizer produced through controlled microbial fermentation. It enriches the soil with nutrients and beneficial microorganisms that improve plant growth naturally.
What are the benefits of FOM?
FOM helps:
1. Improve soil fertility
2. Enhance microbial activity
3. Increase nutrient availability
4. Promote healthy root growth
5. Improve overall crop productivity
Is FOM suitable for all crops?
Yes. It can be used for vegetables, fruits, cereals, flowers, plantations, and horticultural crops.
Can FOM be used with other organic fertilizers?
Yes. It works well alongside Biochar, Vermicompost, and other organic soil conditioners.
Application & Crop Usage
Can I over-apply Biochar or Organic Manure?
Pure biochar is inert and will not burn roots even at higher rates. However, sticking to recommended dosage rates ensures optimal cost efficiency. For FOM and Vermicompost, standard organic application guidelines apply. Check our Growing Guides page for exact crop-wise tables.
Is Biochar suitable for drip irrigation systems or clay soil?
Yes! In heavy clay soil, biochar improves aeration and drainage by breaking up compaction. In sandy soil, it dramatically increases water and nutrient holding capacity. For drip systems, fine-particle biochar or pre-soil incorporation works best.
Are your products safe for vegetables and fruits?
Yes. All our products are made from natural organic materials and are safe for edible crops when used as recommended.
Can I use multiple Ecotrails Growme products together?
Yes. Combining products like Biochar, Vermicompost, and FOM can provide comprehensive benefits by improving soil structure, nutrient availability, and microbial health.
Do your products contain harmful chemicals?
No. Our products are free from harmful synthetic chemicals and are designed to support sustainable agriculture.
How should I store the products?
Store them in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep the packaging tightly sealed after use.
Product Comparison & Selection
Which product should I choose: Pure Biochar, Biochar Green, or FOM?
Pure Biochar: Best for long-term soil structure improvement, custom charging/mixing, or industrial/carbon applications.
Biochar Green: Best for immediate direct-to-soil application for crops, orchards, and gardens (pre-charged with nutrients).
FOM / Vermicompost: Best for quick seasonal nutrient supply and active microbial inoculation.
